Word from the kitchen — the Living Word

Okay, if I have to be honest, I would’ve loved to be one of the disciples who walked and talked and ate with Jesus while He was on earth. Can you imagine? Being there, right next to Him as He performed miracles & told parables. When He walked on water or preached the sermon on the Mount? I think I would’ve wanted to spend every waking moment with Him so that I could drink in every word and capture every scene to my memory!

Truth is, I will never be one of the twelve. Even so, I am thankful that God chose to make Himself known to us through Jesus. I am thankful that Jesus chose disciples to experience His ministry and I am so grateful that the Holy Spirit inspired these men to write about it…so that I too, can have a glimpse on those marvelous three years, when the history of mankind was changed forever!

1 JOHN 1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life 2 the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us 3 that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. 4 And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.

It was about 60 years after Jesus’s earthly ministry. John was overseeing the churches in Asia minor. Unfortunately by the time John wrote this letter, false doctrine & prophets have already crept into the church. So here, John was writing out of first-hand experience to set things straight. We must take note of his writings, because we are still faced with falsehood today, the truth will always be under assault!

You see, the greatest, most valuable treasure we as Christians have is the truth about the “Living Word”, by that I mean the Word incarnated [Jesus Christ] as well as the written Word [everything Jesus Christ said and did], the two are inseparable. In other words the true Gospel message. Because the truth is so valuable, our greatest threat is false doctrine & prophets. Anything or anybody that assaults the true Gospel. Deceivers are very subtle, they don’t proclaim that their way leads to hell, they proclaim that their way leads to heaven, unfortunately it just doesn’t go there. We have a responsibility to protect and defend the truth and that is exactly what John did in this letter.

In Luke 24:39 Jesus said these words  “handle Me…handle Me and realize that a spirit doesn’t have flesh and bones as you see Me have.” And they handled Him. And He told Thomas, “Reach hither and touch My side and see the nail prints and touch them.”

Oh, John was there and he handled Him, I am sure as he wrote this letter the memories were still fresh in his mind as he cried out — I’ve seen Him, I’ve heard Him, I’ve touched Him, I’ve looked upon Him, I’ve witnessed it all. Not only me, but all the others as well. I have come to the conclusion that the real living God was made manifest to us, that we beheld Him so that we can now proclaim Him to you as well. That He is the only way to eternal life. That there is one true Gospel message found in Him and Him alone. It is the same message that was from the beginning, it has never changed!

Hebrews 13:8 “Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever.” There is no new Gospel and there never will be! Hold on to the message that was from the beginning! The message about one sovereign, sufficient Savior! If it is new, it is wrong!  Hebrews 13:9 “Do not be carried away by varied and strange teaching.”

I want to close with the appeal in Jude 1 “Beloved, while I was making every effort to write to you about our common salvation, I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.”
